WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

While the MNR is skeptical the sightings are accurate, Berthiaume picked up some safety tips in case a big cat is really on the prowl. Berthiaume said he has learned you should stand as tall as possible and wave your arms while slowly backing away.

BIG CAT NEWS: mostly Gloucestershire and Scotland

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper column inches than any other cryptozoological subject. There are so many of them now that we feel they should be archived in some way by us, so we should have a go at publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in.

It takes a long time to do and is a fairly tedious task so I am not promising that they will be done each day, but I will do them as regularly as I can. JD

Big cat spotters have their cameras at the ready to prove the critics wrong
This is Gloucestershire
BIG cat spotters are determined to get a clear photograph of the Winchcombe panther-like beast to prove cynics wrong. The black beast has been spotted prowling through fields on the outskirts of Cheltenham. Residents of Mount View Drive believe the...

We start off in Gloucestershire, which continues to be one of the veritable epicentres of British mystery cat reports. There is a picture, which was taken in February, but to be brutally honest, I can't tell what it is. And for some reason I can't embed it without actually stealing it, so you had better go to the link above. It was apparently taken by someone called Coryn Memory. What a brilliant name! It sounds like one of the 1950s pop singers managed by Larry Parnes (Adam Faith, Billy Fury, Marty Wilde etc). The article references Frank Tunbridge who once again talks sense. Good on that bloke.

And now to Scotland for a round up of recent reports:

Police receive 140 big-cat sightings
Scotsman
ALMOST 140 sightings of big cats have been reported to police forces in Scotland over the past five years, the latest figures have revealed. Members of the public have seen large puma-like animals, orange eyes glaring out of bushes, and even farm ...

A neat graphic with a rather worried looking black leopard, and yes, there is also a picture...

Scots police deal with dozens of big cat sightings

Deadline News

SCOTS police have investigated at least 125 big cat sightings in the last five years, new figures have revealed. Though none of the searches produced evidence of the creatures living wild in Scotland, experts call the sightings “intriguing”.

Basically the same story in a different paper. And next is an editorial comment on the same story. The Caledonian press is going to town on this one...

Comment: Survival would be easy, but sightings mean little without hard evidence
Scotsman
By PAUL WESTWOOD
COULD big cats exist in the UK? Yes they could and with relative ease. There is sufficient food and cover to support any big cat, be it a leopard, jaguar or tiger for that matter – although tiger reports are very rare and evidence ...

And another one:

Oh yes: it's the same story again. But this snippet of editorial is new:

U.K. residents convinced snarling panther exists Doubtful Newsblog

Well, these stories of big cat sightings are always interesting. They rarely resolve into something that is actually as interesting. I'm not clear that the big and small one were seen at the same time. Could the small one been seen up close and ...

LINK: Interesting blog about the Rupert Gould Loch Ness Monster book.

http://www.peterharrington.co.uk/blog/2012/04/the-first-book-on-the-loch-ness-monster/

Today we often laugh about the myths that have grown up around the Loch Ness Monster. Recalling all the hoaxes, we wonder how people could be so gullible. But when the first widely-reported sightings stoked a media frenzy in 1933 it was unclear what was happening and many people, journalists and scientists alike, believed it possible that some type of unusual animal could be living in the loch. This led to the first ever book on the monster, The Loch Ness Monster and Others, a 1934 collection of eyewitness accounts gathered by Rupert T. Gould (1890–1948), a renowned horologist and former Lieutenant Commander in the British Navy.

David Bowie once asked Rick Wakeman to tinkle the ivories in 'The Spiders from Mars', but our Rick turned him down. This and more is discussed in a look at a smashing new biography of Mr Bowie. An ex-girlfriend of mine once had an elderly albino anseriform as a pet. I nicknamed it 'The Thin White Duck', and no-one ever laughed at my pun.

And 'Butterfly' by Mimi Page and Bassnectar is storming up the iTunes charts:

See you tomorrow (unless my office gets struck by a meteorite first).

I DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS IS, BUT I BET NEXT MONTH'S PENSION WHAT IT'S NOT

According to the Youtube blurb: On the one of TV channels in Azerbaijan was shown a fresh skeleton of an unknown animal, like the skeleton of a dinosaur or chupacabra, which was found by local residents in Tartar district of Azerbaijan. On the video, the specialists and local residents claim, that they never saw these skeletons, and a representative of the Veterinary Department of Terter district of Azerbaijan said, that he was working in the field of veterinary medicine for a long time, but the first time sees a similar skeleton.

IOWA BIGFOOT REPORT

In a report filed last April with the Bigfoot Field Researchers Association, a man says he doesn’t know what he saw but that it shouldn’t have been there. “I have never told my story due to I feel people will not believe me,” he wrote. While spring turkey hunting back in 2007, he set up on roosted birds as any turkey hunter might. One bird gobbled and he heard something off in the distance:

It continued to get louder. I soon realized the sound I was hearing was coming from up the valley in the direction I could not see. The turkeys in their roost next to me stopped gobbling and remained silent. A few moments later the forest was becoming fairly bright and I could see most everything around me. All of the birds roosted in the tree flew down and hit the forest floor running . . .

As soon as the birds were out of sight the noise began again . . .
